Lansford woman gets prison on drug and other counts

A Lansford woman was sentenced in Carbon County court to a state correctional institution on Thursday on drug delivery and other counts.

Gemile Mehmeti, 33, was sentenced by President Judge Roger N. Nanovic II in five cases to serve a total of 18 months to four years.

Mehmeti previously pleaded to counts of burglary, driving under the influence of a controlled substance, contraband - possession of a controlled substance, possession of a controlled substance and possession of drug paraphernalia.

On Thursday she pleaded to possession with intent to deliver a controlled substance for an incident on April 3 filed by Lansford police following a traffic stop in the borough in which drugs were found in her vehicle. She was also resentenced in two other cases in which she was serving a probation sentence when arrested on new charges. The probation was revoked in those cases and she was resentenced to time-served, 266 days.

Mehmeti admitted to a long-term drug addition problem. He attorney, Paul J. Levy, of the pubic defender’s office, said his client comes from a good family and is very intelligent.

Mehmeti, whose sentencing proceeding was done via video from the county prison where she is an inmate, said she “fell into the wrong crowd.” She said she had gone through rehabilitation programs but relapsed. She said she hopes the state’s drug treatment program within the prison system is the answer to her problems.

She was previously placed in the county’s Drug Treatment Program but was terminated from it when she violated conditions.

On the DUI charge she was fined $1,000 and her license was suspended for 18 months and fined another $1,000 on a driving under suspension count. In addition, she was ordered to supply a DNA sample, zero tolerance imposed on drug or alcohol use, make total restitution to $199 and pay court costs of about $1,000.
