Local riders hit the road to support Valor Clinic

The unmistakable sound of Harleys slowing down to pull into the West End Memorial American Legion Post 927 started at 9 a.m. sharp on Saturday.

Riders from Monroe, Northampton, Lehigh and several other counties once again showed up to support Paul’s House and ride in the McClosky Run.

Post 927 has its own Legion Riders that supports Valor and Paul’s House.

On site, Bert Nazario and his wife, Wanda, from Albrightsville sell just about any patch you could ever imagine. Their trailer is outfitted with sewing machines so that Wanda can sew the biker’s new leather patch on their jacket or vest before the ride.

According to Bert, the couple is a team.

“We travel all over, and we donate to charities. We don’t just give to Valor, and we support breast cancer and several other charities,” he said.

Kickstands up

Around 10:15 a.m., the riders started heading toward their machines, and the bikes sprang to life.

Then, promptly at 10:45 a.m., it was kickstands up.

The riders would travel to the Francis E. Walter Dam in White Haven and then back to have lunch outside provided by the Post 927 Auxiliary.

Valor Clinic Foundation provides shelter to veterans with limited or no access to care. The foundation also helps find shelter for veterans who cannot find shelter or cannot independently secure a safe living place on their own.

“Paul’s House in Jonas has 11 rooms, and we currently have two rooms empty,” said Beth Lutz, a volunteer who handles the public relations for Paul’s House.

The Valor Clinic Foundation Program gives hope to homeless veterans and helps them gain life skills that provide a healthy path back into life.

As a nonprofit, Lutz said they depend on the charity rides bikers hold during the year.

“Valor holds two runs every year and the Resilient Warrior Poker Run and Party in Memory of Rick Murphy on Sunday, June 27,” she said.
