Northwestern rolls past Wilson

Northwestern’s last game was unforgettable.

Coming from behind twice to win the Colonial League title in nine innings against Bangor is a moment the Tigers won’t soon forget.

That was seven days ago.

Northwestern has worked to make sure it won’t be the last memory made this season, something that was evident in Thursday’s 11-1 win over Wilson in five innings in the District 11 Class 4A semifinals.

With the top-seeded Tigers having a bye and a little more down time between games than normal, they wanted to make sure there was no letdown against the Warriors.

A scrimmage against Whitehall on Monday, and a team meeting organized by a few seniors Wednesday, took care of that.

“They sort of righted the ship,” said Northwestern head coach Josh Zimmerman. “They really reestablished the goals that we have. The girls have been saying it, it hasn’t been coming from me, that this is a three-goal team where we want to get three gold medals.

“We put ourselves in a spot where we can accomplish at least two of those as of right now, and hopefully keep on going.”

The Tigers were sharp from the start against No. 4 Wilson.

A four-run first inning set the tone for Northwestern. Morgan Farthing knocked in two runs with a double, and scored on an error to make it 3-0.

Senior cleanup hitter Molly Mitman followed and launched a solo blast over the center-field fence to give the Tigers a 4-0 cushion before the first out was recorded.

“We were really calm and confident starting this game,” said Mitman, who went 2-for-2 with a walk and two runs scored. “I think since we played them before and we beat them the same way (12-2), I think we were more confident in what would happen today.”

Northwestern’s balanced lineup showed it could score in a variety of ways, too.

After a leadoff single from Farthing and a double from Mitman, Marissa Christman and Olivia Stofflet came through with sacrifice flies in the third inning to go up 6-1.

Farthing finished 3-for-3 with two doubles, three RBIs and three runs scored.

No. 9 hitter Kylie Zentz delivered an RBI hit in a five-run fourth inning. Sage Toman (2-for-3, two runs scored) also had an RBI double. Farthing and Stofflet (double) also knocked in runs to help push the lead to 11-1.

“We came out and we knew what had to get done,” said starting pitcher Brynn Balliet. “We didn’t lay on the brakes; we went full force.”

The Warriors got back-to-back one-out singles from Mackenzie Rooks (2-for-3) and Ella Foulk in the top of the third. A single from Olivia Werkheiser (2-for-3) brought in Rooks to make it a 4-1 game.

But Balliet was dominant in the circle for the Tigers. The junior struck out eight in five innings, allowing seven hits while surrendering one run and a walk.

“We started off kind of slow in that scrimmage, but we picked it up,” said Zimmerman. “I think the second half of that scrimmage carried over to today.

“One of the things that’s been kind of missing the past few games is that strong start, and today we had that.”

The Tigers will get a chance to complete the second step in their postseason journey in Tuesday’s final against No. 2 Bethlehem Catholic.

“Coach said we had something special from the very beginning,” said Balliet. “And I think we’re really showing we’re a great group of girls and we put in the time and effort, and we’re just excited to see where we go.”

BIG CONTRIBUTIONS … Though she’s the No. 9 hitter, Zentz has been putting up big numbers. “She hit .700 for the league tournament, which is unbelievable,” said Zimmerman. “And they’re not cheap hits. She’s hitting line drives. But what makes her so dangerous, is that at anytime she’s got speed and can lay down a bunt and get a hit that way.”

RIDING THE WAVE … The postseason can be a roller coaster of emotions, something Mitman and Balliet have tried to keep in check. “It was just the adrenaline rush afterward,” Mitman said of winning the league title. “We got the gold and it was a lot; it was the first time Northwestern has gotten gold in 15 years so it was a lot and I think it all kind of affected us a little bit.” Balliet added, “It feels great to win a championship, but we’re not done yet.”
