Carbon contested races include mayor, supervisors

Two Carbon County boroughs nominated candidates for Mayor Tuesday night.

Palmerton Mayor William Gallagher lost his re-election bid to Don Hermann in the Republican Primary for Palmerton mayor, 256-172. There were no Democratic candidates on the ballot.

Kevin Steber lost to Jeffrey J. Szczecina in Summit Hill’s Democratic mayoral primary, 459-100.

In Franklin Township, Jeff Kuklentz beat Thomas R. Beltz 383-269 to earn the Republican nomination. Kuklentz will face Fred Kemmerer Jr., who ran unopposed as a Democrat.

In Mahoning Township, three people were running for two seats. Top vote-getter on the Republican ticket were Deborah K. McGowan, with 315 votes, and Ronald R. Reeser, with 289. Bernard Mieczkowski had 228 votes.

On the Democratic ticket, Myron Zeke Blahy had 167 votes. He was unopposed, but there were 22 write-ins.

In Banks Township, Supervisor Rick Porpiglia, a Democrat, fended off a primary challenge from David Mazur. There were no Republican candidates on the ballot.

In Summit Hill, the democratic primary for mayor, council, and tax collector were all contested, but there were no Republicans on the ballot.

In the race for three four year-seats on Summit Hill Borough Council, William J. O’ Gurek Jr. was the high vote-getter with 433. Michael L. Alabovitz and Joseph F. Weber also secured a place on the ballot in November. Todd Konstas finished fourth with 277 votes.

O’Gurek Jr. also won the nomination for a two-year term with 266 votes.

In the Summit Hill tax collector’s race, Nathan R. Halenar prevailed over Lacey Gonzalez 426-141.

In Lower Towamensing Township, Terry Kuehner and Jay Mullikin were tied for the lone position on the ballot Both had 151 votes.
