Coaldale working on fireworks ordinance

Coaldale borough council wants to have an ordinance regulating fireworks in time for Independence Day.

Council directed its solicitor to come up with one during its regular board meeting Tuesday night.

They discussed possibly limiting the time and location that fireworks would be allowed.

“It won’t fully stop people, they’re going to do it anyway. But it should cut down on it,” council President Angela Krapf said.

State law says that fireworks can’t be launched less than 150 feet from an occupied structure.

Council discussed possibly limiting the location further. They discussed possibly limiting it to the Black Diamond Park on the east side of town.

In 2020, fireworks complaints were much higher than previous years, due to the state permitting the sale of aerial fireworks. On the holiday, the borough had three police officers patrolling, confiscating many fireworks from people who were using them illegally.

Police chief Keith Krapf said people would continue launching fireworks as soon as the police left.

The ordinance will be available at the borough office for public review seven days before council plans to vote on it at its June 8 meeting.
