Two scheduled for trial instead enter pleas

Two individuals scheduled to go on trial on criminal charges instead reached an agreement with prosecutors and entered guilty pleas.

Ryan Wallace Atwater, 38, of Blakeslee, pleaded guilty to one count of receiving stolen property before President Judge Roger N. Nanovic.

He was arrested on Sept. 12, 2019, by state police at Lehighton following a traffic stop.

Nanovic sentenced him to time-served (29 days) to 18 months in jail and ordered he get a drug and alcohol evaluation and follow any recommendation for treatment and supply a DNA sample.

Yusuf Suliaman Abdullah, 44, of Edwardsville, Luzerne County, pleaded to one count of fleeing or attempting to elude police, as a misdemeanor 2, and a summary offense of driving without a license. The fleeing charge was downgraded from a felony 3 in a plea deal. Also, a charge of recklessly endangering another person, and four motor vehicle code violations, were dropped.

He was arrested on Sept. 3, 2019, by state police at Fern Ridge following a traffic stop.

Judge Joseph J, Matika accepted the pleas. On the fleeing count, Abdullah was placed on probation for a year and ordered to render 50 hours of community service.

On the license count he was fined $200.

Each defendant must also pay court costs of about $1,000 and a $50 per month supervision fee while on probation/parole.
