Man charged with assaulting police chief will head to court

The borough man charged with assaulting the Tamaqua Police Chief is headed to Schuylkill County Court.

Malik X. Zver, 21, waived his preliminary hearing April 27 in District Magistrate Stephen Bayer’s courtroom. He is charged with aggravated assault, simple assault, disorderly conduct and harassment for the March 18 incident. He is out on $50,000 unsecured bail.

Police were dispatched to the 300 block of West Broad Street for a report of a man who was out of control. Upon entry, police observed he appeared to be under the influence of something. He then began to knock on a door and scream at a woman after she opened it. He was placed in a police car he was taken to a holding cell at the station. Police say he threw an elbow at Chief Michael Hobbs, striking him in the face after taking off his shoes and being told to enter the cell. Zver was taken to the ground and put in the cell with handcuffs.

Hobbs went to the hospital for a broken nose.
