Take Back Day nets 995 pounds of drugs

Fifty-nine boxes of drugs were collected Saturday during National Drug Take Back Day in Schuylkill County.

“I’m very pleased with the number of boxes,” Schuylkill County Sheriff Joe Groody said Monday.

He thanked all police departments and other locations that participated. In all, 995 pounds of drugs were turned in at 21 locations.

“That’s a very good amount of drugs,” Groody said.

A Drug Enforcement Agent took the drugs to an incineration plant for disposal. The collection wasn’t held last year because of the pandemic.

This is the 14th event the county has participated. The most drugs collected was in April 2019 when 1,124 pounds were turned in.

The county will participate in the program as long as Groody is sheriff.

“It’s a good program. If you leave these drugs in people’s hands, you invite criminal activity,” he said.

Residents can drop off unused, expired or unwanted medications at the public entrance to the county courthouse 8:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. Monday through Friday. Glass containers, intravenous solutions, injectables, syringes and not permitted.
