An elderly woman was struck and killed by a car Friday in Lehigh County.

State police at Bethlehem said the incident occurred at 10:35 p.m. in front of 2525 Clearview Road in North Whitehall Township.

Troopers said the victim, Ethel M. Haas, 83, of North Whitehall Township, was crawling in the middle of the road as a 17-year-old male from North Whitehall Township, was operating a 2016 Honda Civic southbound. A witness, traveling northbound, stopped and observed the woman crawling. He then observed the Honda striking the crawling woman. Due to the force of the impact the woman was thrown 15-20 feet southwest over the double yellow line and into the oncoming lane of travel.

Haas was pronounced dead at the scene.

Troopers did not state why the woman was crawling in the lane of travel or if charges would be filed against the teen driver.
