Historical society event

Retired U.S. four-star Gen. George Joulwan will be making two appearances on behalf of the Schuylkill County Historical Society on Memorial Day weekend.

Joulwan will sign copies of his memoir, “Watchman at the Gates,” at the society’s building at 305 N. Centre St. in Pottsville on May 29, from 1 to 4 p.m.

In the book, he tells about his childhood in Pottsville, training at West Point and military service that culminated in the position of Supreme Commander of the NATO Forces.

On May 30, Joulwan will be the keynote speaker at a fundraising dinner for the society from 5 to 7 p.m. at the Fountain Springs Country Inn, 52 Country Club Road in Ashland. Copies of his book will also be available.

Joulwan will also speak in Garfield Square on May 31, at 10 a.m. as part of Pottsville’s Memorial Day observance.
