Workers prepare Rt. 209 for roundabouts

It has been a long road since 2017 when the Pennsylvania Department of Transportation first unveiled its plan to build two roundabouts at the intersection of routes 209 and 115 in Broheadsville.

Finally it’s a go.

The Pittston contractor, Latona Trucking Inc., and PennDOT held a preconstruction meeting, and Latona received the notice to proceed, according to Ron Young, PennDOT’s District 5 press officer.

“Although there is no notice of an exact start date, construction workers started some preliminary work putting down compost filler socks to help keep the erosion down during construction and the contractor has also erected fencing around the buildings that need tearing down, so stage one - drainage and utilities - can begin,” Young said.

Latona has agreed to keep one lane on 209 and one lane on 115 open during the majority of the four stages of construction,” he said.

PennDOT will announce a start date soon and once you notice the heavy machines sitting in the staging area, you will know work is going to start in earnest, Young said.

The $18.4 million project is on target to be completed sometime in 2024.
