Man charged in grandmother’s death found not competent to stand trial

Kalvin Clark, 33, the man charged in the homicide of his grandmother in Pine Grove, was recently found not currently to be competent to stand trial in her death.

The order was made by Schuylkill County Common Pleas Judge Jacqueline Russell on April 12. A competency hearing was held Monday. Russell also ordered a stay of prosecution to remain in effect pending a further ruling on his competency to stand trial.

Attorney Thomas Campion Jr. and Clark’s public defender Lora McDonald were present. Clark participated via video from the Schuylkill County Courthouse where he is held on the first- and third-degree murder charges, aggravated assault, strangulation, recklessly endangering another person and simple assault.

He also faces other charges in two other instances unrelated to the murder charges.

District Attorney Michael O’Pake said another evaluation is underway. O’Pake said his office will file a motion to have him sent elsewhere for appropriate treatment.

State Police filed murder charges in February alleging he killed Sharon Zimmerman at their home. Her body was discovered at 89 N. Tulpehocken St. when someone called the Schuylkill County Communications Center saying she had fallen in the shower and had cuts.

Schuylkill EMS responded and found her dead. Police were then called.

Police said Zimmerman had “significant bruising and redness from the right side of her neck around to the left side,” scratches, a deep laceration on the right side of her mouth and a scratch on the left.

All are consistent with being strangled, which is what a pathologist ruled the cause of death was.
