Man fled police, crashed truck in woods, faces DUI

A Weatherly man has been charged after fleeing officers and then crashing his vehicle into the woods.

Weatherly Police Department Officer Edward Kubert was monitoring traffic in the area of West Main Street in Weatherly at 12:40 a.m. March 13 when a purple Dodge pickup with the passenger side headlight not functioning failed to stop at a posted stop sign on Wilbur Street.

The driver, identified as Tyler Fisher, 24, went west on West Main Street and then to Plane Street.

Kubert pulled out to conduct a traffic stop when the Dodge accelerated at a high rate of speed, heading west on Plane Street.

The Dodge traveled four miles crossing the yellow line, multiple times, and at speeds greater than 100 miles per hour.

At the T-intersection of Spring Mountain Road and Route 93, a vehicle was stopped at a clearly posted stop sign ahead of Kubert.

The truck attempted to turn south on 93, narrowly missing the vehicle crashed into a wooded area across 93.

Fisher, 24, refused medical attention and smelled like he was drinking alcohol. His speech was slurred. Fisher refused a field sobriety test.

Fisher was transported to Lehigh Valley Hospital-Hazleton where blood was drawn.

Tests showed 0.266% blood alcohol content.

Fisher said he fled because he was drinking and that he was stopped three weeks ago for another DUI.

Fisher faces charges of fleeing or attempting to elude officer; DUI, highest rate of alcohol; DUI, general impairment/incapable of driving safely; duties at stop signs; no headlights; exceed 35 miles per hour in urban district 65 miles per hour; reckless driving; careless driving; driver unregistered vehicle; driving at safe speed; and failure to keep right.

He is currently free in lieu of $5,000 unsecured bail, and scheduled to have a preliminary hearing May 5 before District Judge Joseph D. Homanko Sr. of Weatherly.
