Carbon Co. denies Northface Development’s proposal

Carbon County has sided with Palmerton borough and school district, voting down Northface Development’s request for a Local Economic Revitalization Tax Assistance program tax abatement at its site in Palmerton.

On Thursday, the board of commissioners voted to “disapprove the abatement” on warehouse buildings proposed for construction on the Northface property.

The commissioners said that they felt there were flaws in the request.

“The other two entities (Palmerton borough and Palmerton School District) saw flaws in the plan and so do I,” Commissioner Rocky Ahner said.

Commissioner Chris Lukasevich noted the existing court case filed by the borough against Northface.

Commissioners’ Chairman Wayne Nothstein said it must have been a very difficult decision for Palmerton, but Northface wasn’t addressing several issues and the cooperation just wasn’t there.

He said he strongly supports the district and borough’s decisions on the matter.

The county heard the request for the LERTA tax abatement from George Petrole, chief operation officer for Northface Development in March.

During the presentation, Petrole proposed a 10-year tax abatement program that would help him build four approximately 500,000-square-foot warehouses, one each year starting in 2022, on the property located just off Route 248.

On April 8, Palmerton borough denied the request and earlier this week, Palmerton Area School District also voted 9-0 against the request.

No PASD board members commented before voting against the plan, but at a workshop two weeks ago, Board President Kathy Fallow said the district, along with representatives from Palmerton Borough and Carbon County “didn’t feel the abatement would be in the best interest of the community at this time.”
