Carbon County court

A total of 16 defendants in pending criminal cases entered guilty pleas in Carbon County court on Monday.

President Judge Roger N. Nanovic II accepted the pleas from the following:

Four cases

Zachary John Bartenope, 22, of Palmerton, entered guilty pleas in four pending cases, three cases involving the Walmart store in Mahoning Township.

He pleaded to two counts of defiant trespass for incidents on July 1 and 8, 2019, for entering the store after previously being told he was not allowed on the property. He also pleaded to retail theft at the store on July 2, 2019. In the fourth case he pleaded to one count of possession of a controlled substance for an incident on July 8, 2019, in Lansford. He was picked up on a warrant and transported to the police station. While in the police cruiser he left drugs on the back seat.

Bartenope also had pending charges in Monroe County, where he is facing a state prison term if convicted.

Nanovic placed him on probation for a total of three years and ordered he get a drug and alcohol evaluation and follow any recommendation for treatment and zero tolerance for drug or alcohol use.

Four cases

Dakota James Wentz, 24, of Lehighton, entered guilty pleas in four pending cases to one count each DUI, possession of drug paraphernalia, public drunkenness, receiving stolen property and disorderly conduct as a summary offense.

He was arrested for the DUI on March 27, 2019, by state police at Lehighton along Route 443 in Lehighton, for DUI of a controlled substance. He was arrested for the receiving charge by Franklin Township police on May 4, 2019, for taking a Nintendo game system from a residence he was visiting and trying to sell it later. The drug count and drunkenness occurred on Jan. 16, 2020, filed by Nesquehoning police, who responded to the 100 block of Railroad Street, for an unconscious male, who was Wentz. Paraphernalia was found on him. The conduct count was filed for an incident on July 2, 2019, along State Road in Franklin Township.

On the receiving charge he was placed on probation for 18 months and the drug count one year probation with the terms running concurrently. He was fined $250 on the drunkenness charge and $300 fine on the conduct charge.

Sentencing was deferred on the DUI charge so he can obtain a drug and alcohol evaluation.

Two cases

Hector Ruben Medina-Pagan, 44, of Allentown, pleaded in two pending cases to retail theft and criminal conspiracy retail theft.

He was arrested on Aug. 23, 2018, at the Walmart store in Mahoning Township on the conspiracy charge where he and another male attempted to steal coffee makers. The second arrest occurred on Oct. 22, 2018, at the Walmart store where he stole blenders.

He is an inmate in the county prison and his pleas were done by video conference.

On the two counts Nanovic sentenced him to time-served (214 days) to one day less 24 months in prison. The term will be followed by one year of probation.

He was also ordered he supply a DNA sample, make restitution of $149 and get a drug and alcohol evaluation.

Three cases

Leiann Crawford, 34, of Philadelphia, and formerly of Summit Hill and Lansford, pleaded in three pending cases to one count each of driving under the influence of a controlled substance, endangering the welfare of a child, possession of a small amount of marijuana and neglect of animals.

She was arrested on the DUI and endangering counts on Jan. 16, 2019, by Lansford police along Patterson Street. She had a child in the car. She was arrested on the neglect count on Jan. 7, 2019, by Lansford police when she abandoned a dog in the 400 block of East Abbott Street. The dog was in poor health and had not been fed. The drug count occurred on Jan. 13, 2019, when police went to her then home in Summit Hill to served a warrant and smelled marijuana coming from the residence.

Sentencing was deferred.

Two cases

Allen Steven Montanari, 46, of Palmerton, pleaded in two pending cases to one count each of driving while license is suspended and DUI of a controlled substance.

He was arrested on the suspension count on March 15, 2016, by state police at Lehighton along Interchange Road in Lehighton. A DUI count was dropped in a plea deal. He was arrested on the DUI charge on the same day by Palmerton police along Delaware Avenue.

Sentencing was deferred so he can apply for placement in the house arrest program.

Other pleas

Andrew William Watkins,Amy Louise Steigerwalt, 34, of Lehighton, pleaded to one count of retail theft. She was arrested on July 24, 2020, at the Walmart store in Mahoning Township.

She was placed on probation for a year and ordered to get both drug and alcohol and mental health evaluations and supply a DNA sample.

Ronald Strohl, 48, of Lansford, pleaded to one count of driving under suspension, DUI related.

He was arrested on Jan. 6 by Summit Hill police along Route 902.

He was sentenced to serve 90 days in jail, pay a fine of $500 with credit for two days already served.

He will begin the jail term at 6 p.m. on April 30.

Michael Allen Keiper, 43, an inmate in the county prison, pleaded to one count of possession of drug paraphernalia.

He was arrested on Sept. 22, 2019, by Nesquehoning police following a traffic stop. He was a passenger in the vehicle.

He was sentenced to serve one to 12 months in prison with 30 days credit for time already served and paroled. He was also ordered to get a drug and alcohol evaluation and zero tolerance imposed on drug or alcohol use.

Michael James Price, 21, of Mahanoy City, pleaded to one count of receiving stolen property.

He was arrested on Nov. 26, 2018, by state police at Hazleton. He was employed at Haulmark Industries of Banks Township, when he was laid off. He took three battery packs belonging to the firm and later attempted to sell them.

Nanovic sentenced him to time-served (29 days) to one year in jail.

Adrian Thompson, 27, of Albrightsville, pleaded to one count of resisting arrest.

He was arrested on June 26, 2020, by Nesquehoning police in the 200 block of West Catawissa Street following a vehicle stop. Police attempted to serve a warrant on him and he resisted.

Sentencing was deferred and the adult probation office was ordered to prepare a presentence investigation report.

Randa Kehl, 33, of Scranton, pleaded to one count of possession of drug paraphernalia. She was arrested on July 10, 2017, by agents of the attorney general’s office falling an ongoing investigation. Police served a search warrant on a resident along Hillside Avenue in Penn Forest Township and Kehl was one of the people found in the home. Two counts of possession of a controlled substance was dropped in a plea deal.

Nanovic imposed a fine of $500.

Corey Daldos, 24, of Coaldale, pleaded to one count of a summary offense of disorderly conduct.

He was arrested on Dec. 8, 2019, by Summit Hill police along East White Street.

He was fined $150.

Victor E. Canales, 62, of Lansford, pleaded to a summary offense of careless driving. He was arrested on Jan. 4, 2018, by Nesquehoning police along Route 209. The charge was added to the complaint with a count of DUI of a controlled substance dropped.

He was fined $25 and ordered to make restitution of $365.98.

Samantha Marie Tagliaterra, 26, of Allentown, pleaded to one count of persistent disorderly conduct. She was arrested on Feb. 1, 2020, by the county sheriff department for failure to report to the county prison to start a weekend sentence. A charge of default in required appearance was dropped in a plea deal.

She was sentenced to time-served (14 days) to one year and ordered to get a drug and alcohol evaluation and zero tolerance for drug or alcohol use.

She is an inmate in the county prison and was paroled.

Donald R. Conklin IV, 26, of Nesquehoning, pleaded to one count of persistent disorderly conduct for an incident on Jan. 28, 2020, along West Catawissa Street in Nesquehoning.

He was fined $500.

Each defendant sentenced must also pay court costs of about $1,000 and a $50 per month supervision fee if on probation or parole.
