Phelan named Patriot League Defender of the Week

Maura Phelan recently earned Patriot League Player of the Week honors for American University’s field hockey team.

Phelan was named the Defensive Player of the Week after helping the Eagles’ defensive line hold the Mountain Hawks to only six shots, four on goal, and three penalty corners. A Lehighton graduate, the defender also scored her first career goal off a penalty stroke opportunity midway through the second quarter in the 2-0 victory.

Phelan has started all four games this season for the Eagles, who are currently 3-1.

She was named to the NFHCA National Academic Squad in both 2018 and 2019, and was also named a Patriot League Academic Honor Roll selection both of those seasons while starting every game.

Phelan was the 2017 Times News Field Hockey Player of the Year.

American closes out its regular season this Sunday at home against Lafayette.

The Patriot League semifinals are scheduled for Thursday, April 22, with the finals set for Saturday, April 24.
