A deep-rooted bank in Mahoning Township plans to shutter its doors in a few months.

PNC Bank, at 1279 Blakeslee Blvd. Drive E., Lehighton, sent a letter to its customers notifying them the bank will close on June 11.

The eventual closure was not welcome news for longtime costumers such as Chris Hunsicker, who said he’s been a customer at PNC ever since his first job when he was 14. He is now 39.

“I opened my account because there was two branches open and I figured it would be easy to do business there,” Hunsicker said. “The other banks were always opening and closing all around, but PNC was there to stay. When the branch on First Street closed I figured Mahoning would never. Well here we are.

“I feel bad for the employees losing their jobs because of it. They’ll probably lose this lifelong costumer from this closing.”

Cheryl Green said she, too, is “extremely disappointed” that the bank will close.

Green said she banked with BB&T back when she was a teen and they were called Keystone. She said they removed the BB&T from Giant, including the ATM.

So, I decided it was best to switch banks, which was a huge headache,” Green said. “Not to mention the IRS sent my stimulus to my old closed account versus using the info on my 2020 return. We will see if I ever get those funds.”

Green added, “Switching banks is such a daunting task.

“I also opened my son’s first checking account with PNC,” she said. “Now we received a letter they are closing, and the closest location is Northampton.

“Had I know all this six months ago, I would of never switched from BB&T.

“Palmerton is a much closer trip than Northampton. This leaves residents with very little options for banking. Highly unhappy.”

Robert Brown said he was also notified of the bank’s eventual closure, adding that they could do their banking in Northampton.

“Gee, I get to drive 20 miles to do my banking and have to pay ATM fees now as there is no PNC machines close,” Brown said. “Customer service at its finest.”

Efforts to speak with the bank’s branch manager in time for today’s publication were unsuccessful.
