Schuylkill tax matter completed

The tax saga between Schuylkill County and the city of Pottsville is now done.

County Treasurer Linda Marchalk said Wednesday a city tax employee Monday gave the county $142,745.22, the total amount of 2020 county real estate taxes the city collected. The money went into the general fund.

Marchalk said she is “happy” the matter is finished.

Jan. 29 the county paid the city two checks, one for $58,245.27 and the other for $12,854.72, which represent the county’s share of wages and benefits and office expenses owed for the county’s share of work associated in collecting the taxes.

Commissioners previously approved an agreement between the city and the county that states the county will share one-third of the expense of the city’s tax office with the exception of the deputy clerk handling city trash accounts, which the county shall be charged at one-half of the one-third expense of the salary and benefits for that position.

The final part was the city giving the county the tax revenue. Pottsville Area School District also pays a third the cost if collecting the taxes.

The long-overdue matter resulted from the county not paying the city the entire year for aforementioned tax collected.

Council responded by passing a resolution in November withholding payment until it was paid.

Marchalk said she wanted a more thorough accounting of work billed for.
