Winter storm proves costly to Lehighton borough

The storm that slammed the area last week proved costly to many municipalities, including Lehighton.

Borough Manager Nicole Beckett spoke to the costs associated with the cleanup at Monday’s borough council meeting.

Beckett said the associated costs with last week’s storm will total over $25,000.

As a result, this year’s allocation for snow removal wages and contracted haulers will be fully expended due to the storm.

With last week’s storm, the borough’s dump trucks needed to be emptied every 15 feet of roadway cleared.

The borough’s yearly budget for winter snow events and maintenance is $67,000 - which is budgeted in its liquid fuels fund - and includes $10,000 for contracted snow removal; $30,000 for materials; and $27,000 for winter maintenance wages.

Councilman Ryan Saunders was quick to heap praise.

“I think you guys did a great job coming up with a schedule,” Saunders said.

Beckett deflected the praise onto others.

“Public Works is great to work with,” Beckett said. “I couldn’t be more proud of them.”

However, Beckett noted that finding room for any additional snow could prove a real challenge.

“The problem is we’re running out of places,” she said.

Beckett lauded the borough’s equipment, which she said is second to none in the area.

“(There’s) no doubt we have the most impressive equipment,” she said.

Beckett also thanked the water department as well.

“Everybody did come together,” she said.
