Schuylkill man charged in death of grandmother

A Pine Grove man is charged with aggravated assault and simple assault in the death of his 73-year-old grandmother.

State police at Schuylkill Haven charged Kalvin Clark, 32, in her death Sunday. Clark is in Schuylkill County Prison on $250,000 cash bail after he was arraigned by Magisterial District Judge Anthony Kilker. A preliminary hearing is set for 1 p.m. Feb. 4 in Kilker’s courtroom.

The Schuylkill County Communications Center received a call at 3:15 p.m. Sunday for an elderly woman who slipped in the shower and had cuts.

Schuylkill County EMS responded at 3:17 p.m. to 89 N. Tulpehocken St. and found Sharon Zimmerman dead in the second-floor bathroom. Police were then called.

Police say Clark admitted he and the victim had an argument before her death. To stop her from yelling, Clark put her hand in her mouth and gave her a “fishhook,” documents show. Zimmerman then slipped at the top of the steps, falling halfway down. Clark placed his arm around her neck then pulled her back up. He then took her to the bottom of the steps where she fell, documents show. He left her there.

He removed her phone to prevent her from calling police.

Clark returned the next day, finding her where he left her. He pulled her to the shower to clean up after she had defecated herself, not noticing until later she “felt cold to the touch.”

Police said she sustained “bruising and abrasions” on her body and “what appears to be a substantial facial injury” from the altercation. She was pronounced dead at 5:44 p.m. Sunday.

A virtual autopsy was scheduled for 5:15 p.m. Monday at The Simon Kramer Cancer Institute, Schuylkill County Coroner David J. Moylan III said. A traditional autopsy is scheduled for Thursday at The Dauphin County Forensic Center, Harrisburg.
