Northampton Co. teen killed in Monroe crash

A Northampton County teenager was killed in a one-vehicle crash on Saturday afternoon in Monroe County.

State police at Stroudsburg said the crash occurred at 1:28 p.m. along Poplar Valley Road West, Hamilton Township.

Troopers said a 17-year-old female from Bangor was driving a 2009 Hyundai Elantra westbound at a high rate of speed and driving over the crest of a hill. Once over the crest of the hill it is believed the vehicle became airborne. Once airborne the teen lost control of the vehicle and struck a tree with the front fender/bumper portion of the vehicle off the right side of the road. After that impact the vehicle did a series of flips and subsequently came to final rest facing south on the road. The teen was pronounced dead at the scene.

A passenger, a 16-year-old female from Bangor, suffered nonlife threatening injuries and was taken to the Lehigh Valley Hospital - Pocono Campus, East Stroudsburg, by West End ambulance.

Troopers declined to release the names of the two teens.
