Local Roundup: Results from Jan. 23

The Jim Thorpe boys and girls basketball teams both posted wins on Saturday.

The Olympian boys defeated Schuylkill Haven in overtime, while the girls topped Palmerton.

Tamaqua also gained two victories, thanks to its girls basketball and wrestling teams.

Other area winners included the Northwestern and Panther Valley boys basketball teams.

BOYS BASKETBALL

Jim Thorpe-Sch. Haven

Kaidon Herron had his second straight 25-point game to help lift Jim Thorpe to a 59-53 nonconference overtime win over Schuylkill Haven.

The Olympians (4-4) outscored their opponent 13-7 in the extra period to win their fourth consecutive game. Herron had four points in OT, as did Chris Condly.

Condly finished with 11 points, while Derryl Fisher chipped in with eight.

The Hurricanes received a game-high 28 points from Mason Ulsh.

Lehighton-Northwestern

Dylan Witkowski scored all 14 of his points in the first half as Northwestern built a big lead and cruised to a 54-39 nonleague win over Lehighton.

The Tigers (5-3) raced to a nine-point first-quarter advantage thanks to 11 points from Witkowski, before using a 13-2 second frame to take full control of the game.

Cayden Fitch added 10 points to the winning cause, while Nick Henry chipped in with seven.

The Indians (3-4) received a team-high 11 points from Jack Lorenz.

Clemente CS-Panther Valley

Stephen Hood poured in a game-high 30 points, including 21 in the second half, to help Panther Valley post a 69-61 nonleague win over Roberto Clemente Charter School.

Hood also pulled down 12 rebounds as the Panthers (3-6) snapped a six-game losing streak.

Chase Weaver contributed 10 points and six assists to the win, while Austin Hadley added six points and 12 boards.

For the Warriors, Christian Ceballos tallied a team-high 20 points.

PV also won the JV game, 55-28, as Bradley Hood scored 12 points and Thomas Kokinda finished with 11.

Aaron Bailey scored a game-high 26 points, including 11 in the fourth quarter, to help Notre Dame of East Stroudsburg hold off Palmerton for a 65-52 nonleague victory.

The Crusaders, who also received 13 points from Xavier Spears, benefited at the foul line going 19-for-23. The Bombers, meanwhile, were just 8-of-17 from the stripe.

Kody Kratzer led Palmerton (2-4) with 22 points, while Matthew Machalik finished with 12.

Pleasant Valley-PM East

Pocono Mountain East had four players reach double figures in scoring to help the Cardinals gain a 64-50 Eastern Pennsylvania Conference victory over Pleasant Valley.

Tamir Thompson paced the winners with 21 points, while Jaycoblee Jackson added 17.

The Bears (0-4) trailed by only three points at halftime, but a 14-5 third quarter by PM East proved the be the difference.

Jarod Moore and Justin Ratti both finished with 14 points for PV, while Leland Hargrow chipped in with 10.

Luke Braucher scored a game-high 19 points for the Panthers, while Nathan Schaeffer finished with 16, including four treys.

The Blue Raiders (0-8) kept the contest close, but came up short of their first win of the season. Nate Gregoire tallied a team-high 18 points for Tamaqua, with Luke Verta adding 14.

Schuylkill Valley also won the JV game, 39-38.

Palmerton-Jim Thorpe

Jim Thorpe exploded for 27 points in the third quarter to help the Olympians pull away from Palmerton for a 65-50 nonleague victory.

Skyler Searfoss paced the winners with a game-high 24 points, while Leah Snisky contributed 15. Thorpe (7-2), which has now won five straight games, also received 13 from Olivia Smelas.

For the Blue Bombers, who dropped to 3-2, Sydney Frantz hit four three-pointers on her way to a team-high 15 points. Brianna Moore finished with 14, with Raegan Nemeth adding nine.

Tamaqua earned its third straight victory, edging Mahanoy Area 57-56 in a nonleague matchup.

The Blue Raiders (6-2) received a game-high 16 points from Trenyce Wingler, while McKenna Meckes finished with 12. The winners, who trailed entering the fourth quarter but scored 22 points in the final frame, also received 11 points from Sophia Boyle and 12 rebounds from Emma Kane.

For the Bears, Claudia Clark tallied a team-high 15 points.

The Bullets limited PV to just one point in both the second and fourth quarters.

Erika Dubosky had 10 points and nine rebounds to lead the Panthers (4-4), while Maddison Maynard added six points and seven boards.

PV also dropped the JV game, 29-28, despite 10 points from Kaidence Krapf.
