Man charged in death of son

The U.S. Marshal Task Force and the Berk’s County Sheriff’s Office Warrants Division arrested a man Friday wanted by the Pottsville Police Department for murder and other charges.

Berks County Sheriff Eric J. Weaknecht said Cordell John Thomas was arrested in the 300 block of Pine Street in Reading. Thomas was wanted on third-degree murder for the death of his 3-month-old child “who died due to blunt force trauma to the head,” Weaknecht said.

Thomas is in Schuylkill County Prison without bail for the Sept. 24 incident. A preliminary hearing is set for 11 a.m Feb. 1 in Magisterial District Judge James Reiley’s office.

Pottsville Police filed felony charges Thursday of third degree murder, involuntary manslaughter, and two charges of aggravated assault- attempts to cause serious bodily injury or causes injury with extreme indifference and victim less than 6 and defendant 18 or older. Three misdemeanor charges of simple assault, recklessly endangering another person and endangering the welfare of children when a parent, guardian or other commits offense were also filed, court documents show.
