NL students return to hybrid learning model

Students in the Northern Lehigh School District returned to the hybrid learning model on Tuesday.

Based on feedback, it went well, according to Northern Lehigh School District Superintendent Matthew J. Link.

“There were a few glitches where some students showed up when it was actually a day for them to be at home learning, but only a few,” Link said. “We were also able to get the Keystone Exams started, and have ample time for any makeups that must occur.”

Link said things went about as well as could have been expected.

“Overall, it was an uneventful return to the hybrid model, which is a good thing,” he said. “We will continue to monitor positive case counts for the next five to 10 days to see if there is a spike in positive cases now that we are back in the hybrid model, but we are hopeful that the short-term fully remote situation after the recent holidays will decrease the chances of that happening.”

The schools had implemented a short-term transition to the fully remote model for the two weeks after winter break, Jan. 4-15.

Last month, the district transitioned to fully remote instruction after several individuals tested positive for COVID-19.

Peters Elementary School transitioned to fully remote as of Dec. 21, while Slatington Elementary has been in the fully remote model since Dec. 10.

Slatington Elementary School was the first building in the district to follow the fully remote instructional model after four employees tested positive for COVID-19.

Link said the district was notified of the first case the evening of Dec. 8, and learned of the other three cases throughout the morning of Dec. 9. Letters were sent to families the afternoon of Dec. 9.

Link also said the district was notified Dec. 9 of one positive COVID case of an employee at the district’s central office building.
