Lehigh County corrections officer dies of COVID

Lehigh County has reported the death of corrections officer Gary Dean, who died of complications from COVID-19.

Dean, 30, of Nazareth, was a dedicated member of the staff since 2016.

“His professional demeanor, bright smile, and positivity was uplifting and encouraging to everyone around him. We extend our most sincere condolences to his family and friends as we grieve this incredible loss,” the county said in a news release.

“Since the very start of the pandemic, we have remained committed to implementing strict guidelines and safety measures to manage and mitigate the virus. Guidance and recommendations from the CDC, PA Department of Health and our contracted health care provider were incorporated into our pandemic response. We will continue to do everything we can to keep those that work in our facility, remain in our custody, and those returning to the local community safe and healthy,” the county said.

The following is a cumulative report of cases at the Lehigh County Jail since the beginning of the COVID-19 pandemic, March 2020.

As of Thursday, 301 inmates tested positive with 296 having recovered.

In current staff and contracted staff, 97 have positive results, with 89 recovered.
