Carbon County court — DUI

A total of nine defendants in pending driving under the influence cases entered guilty pleas in Carbon County court on Thursday.

Judge Joseph J. Matika accepted pleas from the following:

David James Vanderslice, 57, of Whitehall, was arrested on Feb. 29, 2020, by Lehighton police along Alum Street. He pleaded to DUI of a controlled substance.

Matika sentenced him to serve 72 hours to six months in jail, a fine of $1,000, one-year license suspension and render 25 hours of community service.

He will begin the jail term at noon on Feb. 26.

Matthew Albert Mohring, 25, of Northampton, was arrested on Jan. 26, 2020, by state police at Lehighton, along Forest Inn Road in Towamensing Township. A test revealed a 0.08 BAC. Mohring entered his plea via video conference from the Northampton County prison where he is being held on a probation violation petition.

Matika sentenced him to serve five days to six months in jail, pay a fine of $300, one-year license suspension and render 25 hours of community service.

He began serving the term immediately.

Valerie Ann Herbst, 54, of Lehighton, was arrested on Feb. 29, 2020, by Lehighton police along Cypress Street after being involved in a crash. A test revealed a 0.25 BAC.

She was sentenced to serve 48 hours to six months in jail, a fine of $500, one-year license suspension and render 25 hours of community service. She was given credit for 28 days spent in an inpatient rehabilitation program and paroled.

Melissa Ann Romeo, 41, of Pocono Summit, was arrested on Aug. 17, 2019, by state police at Fern Ridge along Route 903 in Penn Forest Township. A test revealed a 0.08 BAC.

Sentencing was deferred so she can obtain a drug and alcohol evaluation and apply for house arrest consideration.

Jazmin Allysa Andrews, 25, of Breinigsville, Lehigh County, was arrested on Aug. 30, 2019, by state police at Lehighton along Route 248 at Bowmanstown. She pleaded to DUI of a controlled substance.

She was sentenced to serve 72 hours to six months in jail, a fine of $1,000, one-year license suspension, supply a DNA sample and render 25 hours of community service. She was given credit for three days already served and paroled.

She also pleaded to possession of drug paraphernalia and was placed on probation for a year, concurrent with the DUI charge, and render an additional 25 hours of community service.

Sara Hernandez, 33, of Coopersburg, was arrested on July 1, 2019, along Bridge Street by Lehighton police. A test revealed a 0.18 BAC.

Sentencing was deferred so she can obtain a drug and alcohol evaluation. She was previously placed in the ARD program but revoked for violating conditions.

Eric Martin Schlier, 40, of Weissport, was arrested on Jan. 18, 2020, by state police at Lehighton along White Street in Weissport. He pleaded to DUI of a controlled substance. He was originally charged with 10 counts.

Sentencing was deferred so he can get a drug and alcohol evaluation.

Leonard Rinehart, 34, of Northumberland, Northumberland County, was arrested on Aug. 21, 2020, by state police at Fern Ridge along Route 534 in East Side Borough. He also pleaded to false identification to law enforcement.

Sentencing was deferred so he can obtain a drug and alcohol evaluation. His plea was done via video conference from the county prison.

Joseph Nicholas Nemeth, 21, of Lehighton, was arrested on Jan. 14, 2020, along Fireline Road in Lower Towamensing Township by state police at Lehighton. He pleaded to DUI of a controlled substance.

Sentencing was deferred so he can obtain a drug and alcohol evaluation.

Summary offense

Tracy Ann Filchner, 55, of Lehighton, pleaded to a summary offense of reckless driving. She was arrested on Sept. 22, 2019, by state police at Lehighton along Pohopoco Drive in Towamensing Township. In a plea deal with the DA’s office, a DUI charge was dropped.

Matika imposed a fine of $200.

Each defendant sentenced must also pay court costs of about $1,000, pay a $50 per month supervision fee while on parole and follow any recommendation of their drug and alcohol evaluation.
