Nesquehoning man sent to state prison for DUI, fleeing count

A Nesquehoning man was sentenced to a state prison term on Tuesday after pleading guilty in Carbon County court to two counts driving under the influence, fleeing or attempting to elude police, accidents causing death of injury, reckless endangering another person, unauthorized use of an automobile and the summary offense of driving under suspension, DUI related.

Brandon Leslie, 32, entered his pleas before President Judge Roger N. Nanovic in two pending cases.

He was arrested on Dec. 14, 2019, by Nesquehoning police after being involved in a hit-and-run along Route 54. In that case he was charged with 13 counts including two recklessly endangering and three drug-related charges. He was arrested on Dec. 19, 2019, also by Nesquehoning police, along Route 209 in which he fled and was eventually apprehended. In that case he was charged with 19 counts including three recklessly endangering and two flight to avoid apprehension charges.

In the Dec. 14 case he had crashed his vehicle and he and two other people suffered injuries.

In the Dec. 19 case he crashed his vehicle into a home, causing extensive damages after fleeing police.

Leslie is currently an inmate in the county prison on the charges. His plea was done via video conference from the jail.

Defense Attorney Brian Collins said his client’s criminal record can be tied to a drug addiction problem.

Nanovic sentenced him to serve a total of 18 months to seven years in a state prison with credit for 199 days already served.

He was also ordered to pay fines totaling $8,500, license suspensions totaling 18 months, supply a DNA sample and pay court costs of about $1,000.

He must also pay restitution for damages to the home which he struck with his vehicle, totaling $39,015.48.
