The Panther Valley boys and girls basketball teams both won their season openers on Saturday.

BOYS BASKETBALL

Panther Valley-Kutztown

Stephen Hood poured in a game-high 26 points and also pulled down 10 rebounds to help Panther Valley open its season with a 70-53 nonleague win over Kutztown.

Drew Kokinda also contributed 15 points for the Panthers, who used a big fourth quarter to pull away for the victory.

Hood and Kokinda both had four three-pointers in the contest, while Chase Weaver chipped in with 12 points. All three players are freshmen. PV also received 10 rebounds from Austin Hadley.

For the Cougars, Xavier Goodman netted a team-high 20 points.

Meadowbrook Christian

A game-high 26 points from Antonio Colecio sparked Weatherly to a 61-32 nonleague victory over Meadowbrook Christian.

Colecio, who also added seven rebounds and six assists, tallied 16 of his points in the first half as the Wreckers (1-1) raced to a 17-point halftime lead.

Scotty Zoscin contributed 12 points to the win, while Trevor Lowman chipped in with eight.

Weatherly also won the JV game, 66-23, as Ian McLaurin and Ricky Ray both scored 15 points for the junior Wreckers.

Nativity-Weatherly

Weatherly dropped a narrow 66-60 decision to Nativity in its season opener on Friday night.

The Hilltoppers outscored the Wreckers, 22-13, at the foul line to secure the victory. The winners made 12 of their free throws in the fourth quarter.

Marquis Ratcliff paced Nativity with 20 points.

Weatherly received a game-high 22 points from Scotty Zoscin, while Antonio Colecio finished with 18.

GIRLS BASKETBALL

Kutztown-Panther Valley

Erika Dubosky scored eight of her game-high 17 points during the third quarter to help Panther Valley gain a 39-26 victory over Kutztown in its season opener.

The Panthers (1-0) outscored their opponent 12-4 in that third frame to help extend what was a narrow lead.

Maddison Maynard added 13 points for PV, while Sera Robin chipped in with seven. Dubosky collected nine rebounds, and Abby Vermillion pulled down six boards.

Panther Valley also won the JV game, 35-28, as River Knoblauch led the way with 11 points.

KUTZTOWN

Northwestern had no trouble with Pottsville, cruising to a 48-27 nonleague victory.

Paige Sevrain scored a game-high 12 points for the Tigers, who led by 19 points at halftime.

The winners (2-0) also received 10 points from Alexandra Lister, while Sara Ledeboer chipped in with seven.

Jim Thorpe-Notre Dame GP

Grace Medei scored a game-high 17 points as Notre Dame pulled out a 52-48 nonleague victory over Jim Thorpe in a matchup of two of the top programs in District 11.

Medei tallied eight of her points in the fourth quarter as the Crusaders help off the Olympians, who trailed by just one entering the final frame.

Skylar Searfoss finished with a team-high 16 points for Thorpe (1-1), while Leila Hurley also hit double figures with 13. Leah Snisky chipped in with nine.

Pine Grove spoiled Marian’s season opener by registering a 33-28 nonconference victory.

Bailley Dorson led the Cardinals with nine points, while Mikaili Donmoyer hit six free throws in the fourth quarter to help seal the win.

The Fillies (0-1) received a team-high nine points from Ashley Pleban. Jacalyn Possessky chipped in with seven.

Pine Grove-Tamaqua

A balanced scoring attack helped Tamaqua gain a 45-36 Schuylkill League win over Pine Grove Friday night.

Sophia Boyle tallied a team-high 11 points for the Blue Raiders (1-0), while McKenna Meckes finished with nine. The winners also received eight from both Serena Jones and Trenyce Wingler.

Tamaqua also won the JV game, 31-25, behind 17 points from Gabby Robb.

WRESTLING

North Schuylkill-Lehighton

Lehighton won seven of the 13 bouts wrestled, but North Schuylkill registered pins in all of its wins to post a 36-33 Schuylkill League victory.

The Indians (1-1) posted three falls, as Jon Ahner (145 pounds), Gauge Hartney (215) and Michael Yeakel (285) each earned mat slaps. Richard Fronheiser added a technical fall at 172, while Steven Fritzinger gained a major win at 138.

Ridge Snyder and Gabe Heaney both produced pins for Jim Thorpe, but those were the only team points produced for the Olympians during a 45-12 Schuylkill League victory by Tri-Valley.

Snyder gained his fall at 120 pounds, while Heaney’s came at 160.

The Bulldogs had four pins and also received three forfeits.

Pins by Randy Steigerwalt and Aaron Coccio gave Tamaqua an early lead, but Pottsville eventually gained a 53-24 Schuylkill League victory.

Steigerwalt’s fall came at 152 pounds, while Coccio followed with a six-pointer at 160. The Blue Raiders also received pins from Nate Wickersham (215) and Michael Shlanta (138).

The Crimson Tide also registered four falls and took advantage of four forfeits.

Kolbe Robb added 10 points in the win. PV was led by E. Dacey’s seven points.

Girls 7th Grade

Tamaqua-Panther Valley

Tamaqua cruised to a 39-12 victory over Panther Valley.

Cecilia Ulicny had nine points to lead the Raiders, while Kendel Miller finished with eight.

PV received a team-high eight points from M. Orsulak.
