No significant problems found in dam inspection

On Monday, the Carbon County Commissioners released the inspection report for the Mauch Chunk Lake dam.

The board said that there were no significant problems found during the inspection.

The Dam Safety High Hazard Dam Inspection report, which was conducted by the Pennsylvania Fish and Boat Commission, stated that there were no surface cracks, sink holes, animal burrows or low areas observed in the dam; vegetation appears to be in good condition and some slight rutting from the walking path was observed but was stable and should be repaired if conditions worsen.

One area that the county must repair is the grading, which inspectors observed to have irregular contours. Repairing this will allow for better conditions when it comes to maintaining the dam.

Mauch Chunk Lake is located in the boroughs of Jim Thorpe and Summit Hill and was constructed in 1972 as part of a $3 million flood control plan that was commissioned by the late Agnes McCartney, who was the county planning commissioner at the time, to help the town of Jim Thorpe, which experienced significant flooding frequently from the Mauch Chunk Creek.

The dam stands at 50 feet high and 1,710 feet long and was constructed by the United States Army Corps of Engineers.
