State police at Schuylkill Haven reported investigating a fatal crash on New Year’s Day.

The crash occurred at 2:43 a.m. along Route 895 in West Brunswick Township, Schuylkill County. Troopers said Gustavo Mulato, 28, of Hazleton, was driving a 2006 Hyundai Sonata westbound and failed to negotiate a left-hand curve in the road. The vehicle went onto the berm and struck a sign, continued into a grass field and hit an embankment becoming airborne. The vehicle then struck two trees before coming to rest in a culvert.

Mulato was taken to the Lehigh Valley Hospital, Cedar Crest, where he died. Passengers Jose J. Jimenez Arias, 23, of Loc El Zapote, Honduras, and Johnissa A. Andrini, 18, of Shenandoah, were injured. Arias was also taken to LVH with serious injuries. Andrini was taken to the Reading Hospital with minor injuries.
