Police have wanted Slatington man in custody

A Slatington man wanted after he drove his vehicle at a high rate of speed toward police and then led them on a high-speed chase Wednesday night is in custody.

Lehigh Township Police said they began chasing Roy Schlegel Jr. at 2:20 p.m. when he was spotted walking along Mountain View Drive in the township.

Schlegel, 33, was found hiding in the shed at 1245 Meyers Dr.

He was remanded to Northampton County Prison with outstanding warrants from Lehigh Township and Slatington Borough Police.

Police said that at 11:51 p.m. Wednesday, Lehigh Township police officers were dispatched to the 1000 block of Blue Mountain Drive for a domestic dispute.

Police received information that Schlegel assaulted his girlfriend and took her vehicle.

At 1:51 a.m. police were called because Schlegel had returned to the victim’s home.

Upon police arrival, Schlegel began revving the engine of the vehicle, a black 2001 Hyundai Sante Fe. He drove the vehicle at a high rate of speed toward police, who were standing in the driveway.

Schlegel fled, with police pursuing him for a short time. Due to the high speeds and erratic manner Schlegel. was driving, police terminated the pursuit.

Lehigh Township Police and Slatington Police Departments both had felony warrants for Schlegel for different incidents involving separate fleeing and eluding and resisting arrest cases in August.

An additional warrant was issued for Schlegel for charges of felony fleeing and eluding; flight to avoid apprehension; resisting arrest; stalking; reckless endangering; unauthorized use of a motor vehicle and reckless driving.

Lehigh Township Police talked to Schlegel by telephone at the end of November. He told police he was not going back to jail.
