West End news for Dec. 3, 2020

Frozen meals

The Monroe County Area Agency on Aging is now able to offer frozen meals to seniors if they are in need of food.

Frozen meals can be picked up at the senior center one would normally attend on a weekly basis. For most West Enders that would be the center at Zion Lutheran Church in Brodheadsville. Should you be in need of food, contact the Loder Senior Center at 570-420-3745. That center is overseeing the food ordering for all of the senior centers.

Effort Pantry

Effort UMC’s Supplemental Food Resource Center was able to feed 46 families at its last distribution.

The pantry is asking for donations of boxed stuffing mix, canned vegetables, cranberry sauce, potatoes, staples for a Christmas dinner.

The next distribution day is from 10 a.m. to noon Dec. 12.

Roast beef dinner

McMichaels UMC will hold a donation-only roast beef dinner from 2 to 5 p.m. Dec. 12.

Dinner includes roast beef, homemade filling, gravy and green beans.

Drive-thru pickup only. All are welcome.

Eldred meeting

The regular meeting of the Eldred Township Board of Supervisors scheduled for Dec. 16 will take place, and in addition there will be a special meeting at 2:30 p.m. Dec. 22 to approve the final budget for 2021 and conduct any other business that may come before the board.

Santa drive-thru

American Legion Post 927 will host a children’s Christmas drive-thru with Santa from noon to 2 p.m. in the Post 927 parking area on Dec. 20.

This is an open community event and children will receive a free unwrapped gift.

Post 927 members who sign up at the Post bar will receive wrapped gifts for their children. All other participants’ gifts will be unwrapped.

Meeting canceled

The December meeting of the Order of the Eastern Star, Monroe Chapter, is canceled.

Volunteers sought

The Monroe County Seniors Express has forwarded information that the AARP Foundation is now recruiting volunteers for in-person and virtual Tax Aide service. Volunteer tax preparers complete tax preparation training and IRS certification.

To learn about our volunteer opportunities, visit aarpfoundation.org/taxaide or call 888-OUR-AARP (888-687-2277). AARP Foundation Tax Aide is offered in coordination with the IRS.

Outdoor service

McMichaels UMC anticipates Christmas Eve services being at 3 and at 5 p.m. Christmas Eve, weather permitting.

If it is raining or snowing, the services will be inside. Otherwise they will be outside for approximately a half-hour with a contained fire and Christmas carols.

One must still wear a mask and dress with a warm coat and gloves. Attendees may bring a chair or stand but Scripture will be read, a few carols sung and distance fellowship practiced. No music will be provided except recorded songs.

If it rains or snow is on the ground, worshippers must go inside.

Masks must be worn inside or outside. The plans are to keep the sanctuary cool so attendees are reminded to dress accordingly as the church has been advised to do this.

Christmas card bags will be handled out to families after the services.

Live Nativity

Effort UMC is planning a live Nativity program for the 6 p.m. Christmas Eve Service. This program will be held in the Pavilion on Dec. 24.
