West Penn to advertise budget, reduce taxes

The West Penn Board of Supervisors met on Wednesday morning to discuss budget matters.

The board voted unanimously to reduce real estate tax 2021.

“In a time of uncertainty, and many of us are having a rough year, it’s a little something that the township thought could help the people of the township,” said supervisor Tony Prudenti.

The reduction will be a quarter millage. Prudenti said each department came together to make it possible.

“We realize it’s not a great deal of money,” said vice chairman Tim Houser. “But I think that shows to the taxpayers that we’re endeavoring to droll our spending. With everything that’s going on in the world, with COVID and a lot of business is hurting, we feel a little something is better than nothing. To reduce the taxes in a time when everything seems to be escalating, or inflationary, it shows that we’re trying to maintain the township in a positive way.”

Additionally, after discussing the idea for a few years, the township will construct a new pole building to store and protect equipment. Houser said the pole building will have a long life span, as it’s planned to be built with a cement column called “perma-column,” which is much like having a concrete foundation.

“The reason for the pole building is that we’re acquiring more equipment because of the size of our township,” said Houser. “We don’t have the storage space in our garage.

A motion to advertise next year’s budget was unanimously passed, with the total set at $2,702,912.
