Longtime director lauded for 24 years of service on NL school board

A long-serving director with nearly a quarter-century on the Northern Lehigh School Board has made the honor roll.

Board President Gary Fedorcha, who has served on the board for 24 years, was recognized on Monday by the Pennsylvania School Boards Association.

Karen Devine, director of member services, Pennsylvania School Boards Association, said that since 1983, PSBA began recognizing school directors at eight years of service and every four years thereafter.

“We call this the Honor Roll of School Board Service,” Devine said. “The Honor Roll is the association’s way of saying thank you to those individuals who exemplify leadership, statesmanship, giving unselfishly of their time and talents for the future of their public schools.”

Devine then showed a certificate, along with a glass plaque, which she said will be mailed to Fedorcha.

“That’s amazing,” Devine said. “And my only regret is that I couldn’t present this to you in person for 24 years of school board service.”

Fedorcha said he was appreciative of the recognition.

“I’m a little speechless about it because I guess, I don’t think any of the board goes into this to be recognized for anything, and certainly we don’t get paid,” Fedorcha said. “My commitment to education has always been there for our children, for my children, my grandchildren, but for everybody’s children, and being an educator myself made it even more so.”

For his part, Fedorcha then heaped praise on his fellow colleagues.

“But the most important part to me is that I have a board that is fantastic; I look at boards across the state and wherever else there are conflicts and conflicts,” he said. “We have a board who can disagree, but constantly agree, and we really don’t have conflicts among our board, and it makes things really easy to remain on the board, and to be on the board for 24 years is a commitment, but it’s been a joyous one because I’ve had boards to work with like I have right now.”
