Man involved in crash dies; coroner says cardiac arrest likely

A man who suffered a cardiac arrest at a crash scene in Mahoning Township Saturday has died, according to Carbon County Coroner Robert Miller.

Miller said Chad Obenski, 47, of Slatington, suffered a cardiac incident. A tow truck driver administered CPR at the scene, but he was pronounced dead at St. Luke’s Lehighton campus.

Several people were injured in the crash which occurred just after noon on Route 443

According to reports on the scene, a driver traveling east on Route 443 lost control.

The vehicle climbed the bank of the southwest corner of the intersection with Penn Street. It continued on striking several other vehicles before coming to rest facing east in the westbound lane.

Numerous medical units responded to the scene.

Mahoning Township police are investigating the incident. Route 443 was closed to traffic because of the crash.
