Former Lehighton pastor chosen as synod bishop

The Rev. Christopher deForest of Kutztown was elected Oct. 24 to serve a six-year term as bishop of the Northeastern Pennsylvania Synod of the Evangelical Lutheran Church in America. The election took place during an online synod assembly.

DeForest was elected on the fifth ballot, with 260 votes. The Rev. Ryan Hersch, pastor of Atonement Lutheran Church in Wyomissing, received 222 votes.

The bishop-elect has served as pastor of Trinity Lutheran Church in Kutztown, since 2018. Previously he served St. John Lutheran Church, Lehighton, (2011-2018). Prior to his ordination he was an interim executive director (2007-2008); a director of communication (1993-2003); and a video creative specialist (1987-1992).

DeForest received a Bachelor of Arts degree from the University of New Mexico, in Albuquerque, New Mexico, in 1987, and Master of Divinity degree from Wartburg Seminary in 2009.

The livestream installation is set for Dec. 5.

The Rev. Samuel Zeiser has served as bishop of the Northeastern Pennsylvania Synod since August 2008.
