Schuylkill County voters overwhelmingly go GOP

Schuylkill County voters, as expected, went big for President Donald Trump and the entire Republican slate of candidates in Tuesday’s election.

Trump easily defeated Democrat Joseph R. Biden in the presidential race by 45,078 votes to 17,106. All vote totals are unofficial due to the lag in counting mail-in ballots and absentee ballots. Also, write-in ballots are counted on Friday, but those totals would not have an affect on the outcome of any of the races.

In the statewide races the totals for the county were:

State treasurer: Stacy L. Garrity (R), 42,395; incumbent Joe Torsella, (D) 17,221; Libertarian Joe Soloski, 1,572; and Green Party Timothy Runkle, 830.

Attorney General: Heather Heidelbaugh (R), 40,072; incumbent Josh Shapiro (D), 20,205; Libertarian Daniel Wassmer, 1,336; and Green Party Richard L. Weiss, 671.

Auditor General: Timothy DeFoor (R), 42,059; Nina Ahmad (D), 16,494; Libertarian Jennifer Moore, 2,566; and Green Party Olivia Faison, 692.

In Schuylkill Meuser got 44,718 votes to 17,456 for Wegman. The district also includes all or portions of Carbon, Columbia, Lebanon, Luzerne, Montour and Northumberland counties. Meuser’s grand total was 146,478 to 65,882 for Wegman.

In other state house districts in Schuylkill, Republican Tim Twardzik defeated Democrat Peter PJ Symons Jr. 14,332 to 8,207 in the 124th district. The district includes the northern end of the county. Incumbent Democrat James Goodman, who held the office for numerous years, did not seek re-election.

Republican Joe Kerwin was the lone candidate for the 125th District, getting 20,231. Incumbent Republican Michael Tobash did not seek re-election. The district runs from the west end of Pottsville to the Dauphin County line.

There was a ballot question for Tamaqua borough voters. The question asked if voters wanted the borough to borrow $2.5 million dollars to improve/rebuild, the Bungalow community pool. The voters approved the resolution, 1,751 to 865.
