Two students at Tamaqua Elementary test positive for virus

Tamaqua Area School Superintendent Ray Kinder posted a letter Monday night informing families that two more cases of COVID-19 have been confirmed. Fourteen people are in quarantine.

The results were from Oct. 27 and 31, Kinder said.

“Both individuals are students at Tamaqua Elementary School, however the cases are not related and are attributed to outside sources,” Kinder said.

Kinder said the students, who are now in isolation and recovering, have not been in school for several days.

Kinder said the school district has utilized protocols from the Department of Health, collected data, and analyzed factors of transmission.

Cases appear to be isolated, Kinder said.

“If cases begin to cluster or become widespread, we will need to react cautiously to support the health and well-being of our students and staff.”

Last Friday, a student at Tamaqua Elementary tested positive, and two others were in quarantine. On Thursday, a student at the high school tested positive.

On Oct. 23, a case was reported at the elementary school, with 10 in quarantine.

On Oct. 21, two cases of COVID-19 were reported. One is a high school student and the other a middle school staff member.

The Department of Health reported that Schuylkill has a substantial level of community transmission. The departments of education and health planned to speak with school district representatives in Schuylkill to discuss the implications of this level of transmission.
