Community Mission nonprofit expands into Lehighton
They feed and house those in need 24/7.
As the need has increased, so has the demand for help that The Community Mission needs to help them help others.
Pastor Bob Alonge, lead pastor of The Community Mission in Minersville, said the group continues to expand.
About three weeks ago, Alonge said a location was opened in the basement of Claypoole’s General Store at 101 N. First St. in Lehighton,
Distribution occurs at that site from noon until 4 p.m. Tuesday.
“We’re really seeing the need in Lehighton,” Alonge said. “Over 100 people came out last week.”
Based out of Minersville, Alonge said the nonprofit organization also has a location in Shenandoah.
“Just like the name says, we are whatever community we are in,” he said. “We figure out what the needs are of the community, (and) try our best to supply it, whether it’s food, whether it’s a church.”
Alonge said they have a warehouse in Shenandoah, and said proceeds from that building go to the group’s housing program.
“We try to provide people with the basic needs of food, shelter, clothing and also spiritual needs,” he said. “Our shelves are bare; the food comes, it’s all perishable foods so far, (and) we’re also trying to stock it with nonperishable foods.”
Alonge noted that while the group has Community Outreach Workers, it will take all the help it can get.
“We’re always looking forward to people that have the heart of serving,” he said. “We would welcome them for help; we need help loading and unloading the truck and cleaning up at all locations.”
Alonge encouraged anyone with questions to visit thecommunitymission.com, and to click on Facebook and like them to get updates. Or, he said they can call 570-617-4620.
