Lehighton school district announces 3 bus pickup locations

Lehighton Area School District has announced the three pickup locations for students living in the borough who will be taking the bus to school in the morning.

On Monday, Lehighton’s school board approved three morning runs for students in the borough through George’s Transportation at an additional $50 a day.

The three morning pickup locations are Second and Coal streets, Second and Iron streets, and Second and Bridge streets.

“We talked with Leon George and because of the current timing of the middle school and elementary runs, he does have the opportunity to make a loop through with those three buses in the morning only,” Lehighton Superintendent Jonathan Cleaver said. “We will go through the process of finding out how many students plan to take advantage of this and setting up where those three bus stops will be.”

In late August, Lehighton’s board passed a motion allowing for up to $800,000 to be spent on student busing with George’s Transportation Co. This came after non-mandated transportation was not included in the district’s 2020-21 budget.

The transportation plan, however, did not call for busing students who live in Lehighton Borough.

According to an announcement sent out after the board meeting earlier this week, the district is asking parents to call their child’s school by the end of the day on Monday and provide their child’s name along with their preferred bus stop.

“This will help us to make decisions with assigning seats, setting up pickup times, and giving notice to those parents who are interested,” the announcement stated. “Our hope is to gather information from parents and begin the morning bus transportation in early November.”

There is no plan at this time to offer afternoon transportation for students living in the borough.

District officials said they are continuing to encourage parents to drive their children to school to support social distancing of students.
