Franklin Township official approached about water runoff from his property

A Franklin Township official has been taken to task by a resident who says he’s tired of the water runoff that comes from his property.

Paul Hunter, who resides on Fairyland Road, confronted board Chairman Jason Frey during Tuesday’s board of supervisors meeting about water runoff.

However, Frey, who lives on Cedar Street, said the water wasn’t coming from his property.

Hunter said he spoke to the township’s zoning officer about the situation and added something has to be done.

Frey reiterated to Hunter that the water runoff was not coming from his property, and that he has a right to his property.

“It was fine when my property was a retention pond,” Frey said.

Regardless, Hunter told Frey his problem was with the dirt.

“I’m not arguing,” Hunter said. “You can’t just keep putting dirt in like you are.”

Further, Hunter said the matter wouldn’t be an issue if the dirt wasn’t there and it was graded.

Frey then asked what the difference is if the water runs across his (ground) or Hunter were to put a pipe in.

“Why would I want a swale in my yard? Hunter asked. “There’s no reason for dirt to be there.”

Frey said he believes Motola’s property is also responsible for some of the problem.

“My intention is to level the yard so that it’s nice,” Frey said. “It’s not my water runoff.”

Hunter told Frey it isn’t just his property, but Motola’s on East Second Street as well.

Supervisor Robin Cressley said he understood where Frey was coming from.

“I have a pole building the same as his,” Cressley said. “It’s not really the building itself; it’s the (water).”

Regardless, Hunter said he’s tired of the situation.

“Everything’s adding up together,” Hunter said. “It’s not just Motola’s.”

All of their yards butt up to one another.

Frey told Hunter he’s willing to put in a storm box, despite Hunter saying he doesn’t believe that will address the matter.

“I do feel bad; all I’m trying to do is make my yard look nicer,” Frey said. “I can try that storm box, (but) I think Motola should be responsible (for some too).”

Hunter told Frey he doesn’t mind taking some water, but that he’d like Frey to put the property back to the way it was.

Frey shot back with his thoughts.

“Why would I want a retention pond? So, can’t anyone improve their property?”

Hunter said that wasn’t what he was suggesting.

“You can improve it,” Hunter said. “But, don’t flood me out.”
