More cases of COVID-19 at Schuylkill courthouse

More cases of COVID-19 have been reported among county employees.

A letter from Doreen Kutzler, interim human resources director, Tuesday said “additional employees” have tested positive for COVID -19. Employees were provided with instructions about quarantine requirements and precautions to take.

Kutzler did not return a call for comment Tuesday.

The county announced earlier this month steps to combat the pandemic at the courthouse and ancillary buildings. President Judge William E. Baldwin also issued an order regarding requiring employees, county and judicial officials to be screened initially upon entering the courthouse.

Actions by the county include contact tracing, consistent cleaning and disinfecting of common areas of the courthouse facilities, work spaces and others.

Commissioners voted earlier this month to spend $238,000 on plumbing and fixtures for county buildings to address COVID-19 concerns. Antz Energy Systems, Shenandoah, will do the work. COVID -19 funds will be used for the expense.

Additional work by the company is possible. Today’s commissioners agenda shows a request for an agreement with Antz for “15 Elkay touch-free water coolers/drinking fountains” for the courthouse, office of senior services and children and youth building. The cost is listed as $21,750. The agenda does not state the reason for the purchase.

County Administrator Gary Bender, commissioners Barron “Boots” Herherington and Gary Hess did not return a call for comment. Commissioner George Halcovage Jr. did not return a text for comment.
