Man charged after attempted break in at Monroe home

A Bronx, New York, man has been charged after breaking into a Monroe County home claiming that “gang members” were trying to shoot and kill him.

According to the affidavit of probable cause filed by troopers from the Pennsylvania State Police, Stroudsburg Station in the case against Kwesi Skerritt:

At 4:45 p.m. Sunday, Pennsylvania State Police received a 911 call from the victim, who reported that a black man, Skerritt, 38, had broken into his residence.

The victim said that he currently had Skerritt detained, at gunpoint, in the kitchen of his home.

Troopers responded to the residence, at which time trooper William Jenkins placed Skerritt in handcuffs and escorted him from the residence.

At 5:15 p.m., trooper Justin Leri interviewed the victim, who said he had been sitting in his living room when he observed someone near the front door of his home, which was on a secluded dirt road on top of a hill.

The victim said he then went to the front door, where he observed Skerritt standing near the door, and that Skerritt began “rambling” on about being chased by gang members and to call 911.

He said that Skerritt told him that the “gang members” were shooting at him and trying to kill him.

The victim said that he became increasingly concerned with Skerritt’s behavior and told him to sit down on the step.

He said the victim then re-entered his residence, locking his front door, stating that in a concern for his safety, he wanted to retrieve a firearm, while also calling 911.

The victim said that moments later, he heard a loud crashing sound come from his kitchen area, and then observed Skerritt standing within the middle of his kitchen after smashing through a back window and climbing over the counter.

He said that due to Skerritt forcefully breaking through a window and entering his residence, he felt he was in imminent harm, and so he immediately drew his pistol from the holster and ordered Skerritt to the ground while being on the phone with PSP desk personnel.

The victim said that he had never seen Skerritt before.

During the interview, Leri saw Skerritt had thrown large rocks through a rear kitchen window, which he subsequently climbed through.

The victim said that the damage appeared to be over $2,000, which included the window and damage to a custom sink.

Jenkins attempted to interview Skerritt, who provided confusing statements related to his travel and reasons for being at the home, stating that “gang” members were after him and shooting at him.

Skerritt was ultimately placed under arrest and transported to PSP Stroudsburg.

It is believed Skerritt was under the influence of a controlled substance at the time of this incident.

Skerritt faces charges of criminal trespass, simple assault and criminal mischief.

He is currently incarcerated in the Monroe County Correctional Facility in lieu of $100,000 monetary bail, and scheduled to have a preliminary hearing Oct. 22 before District Judge Phillip R. Riley of Mountainhome.
