October 19, 1975 - Former Panther Valley track standout Bob Thomas posts a record time in capturing first place at the 5th Annual Switchback Scamper race. Thomas, who also starred at East Stroudsburg State College, finishes in 28:35 to break the old mark by a minute and 42 seconds. Lehighton’s Kevin Koch and Dan Schoenberger take second and third, respectively, in the event that draws 130 runners. Thomas receives the Frank G. McCartney Memorial Trophy for winning. Earning ribbons in their age categories are Jim Thorpe’s George Mitzen Jr. (nine years old) and Lehighton’s Darryl Volkert (14-18 years).
