Local Roundup: Results from Oct. 17

Four players had hat tricks to help lead their teams to victories on Saturday.

Palmerton’s Brianna Moore actually scored five goals in a soccer win over Lehighton, while Pleasant Valley’s Teah Cardoza (soccer) and Candyce Fougere (field hockey) led the Bears to lopsided wins over Pocono Mountain West.

In boys action, Lehighton’s Mason Marchessault had three goals in a soccer win over Palmerton.

Also, the Indians’ boys junior high cross country team captured the Schuylkill League championship.

GIRLS SOCCER

Palmerton-Lehighton

Palmerton’s Brianna Moore scored five goals to lead the Blue Bombers to a 6-2 non-league victory over Lehighton.

Moore scored the first three goals of the game to give her team a 3-0 lead. Teammate Carissa Fallon assisted on all three of those goals.

The Bombers (6-3-1) received two more tallies from Moore in the second half, while Gianna Kintz finished off the scoring for the winners.

Charli McHugh scored both goals for the Indians, who fell to 3-12-1.

PM West-Pleasant Valley

Teah Cardoza had three goals and an assist to power Pleasant Valley to an 8-0 Eastern Pennsylvania Conference victory over Pocono Mountain West.

Cardoza assisted on the game’s first goal, scored by Aurora Cruci, and tallied the second to get the Bears (3-1) off to a quick 2-0 start.

The winners, who registered 10 corners in the contest, also received goals from Larissa Mulligan, Ella Muir, Madison Fava and Autumn Castro.

Alexa Weaver and Laura Babu both had two assists in the shutout, while Alexa Pridham and Muir each added a helper.

Pleasant Valley-PM East

In a match from Friday, undefeated Pocono Mountain East edged Pleasant Valley 2-1 in an Eastern Pennsylvania Conference contest.

Ava Hooten scored both goals for the Cardinals (7-0), included a second-half tally that snapped a 1-1 tie.

The only goal by PV came from Teah Cardoza.

East, who also received assists from Carly Pyatt and Madison Kice, finished with a narrow 5-4 edge in shots, while the Bears had a 4-3 advantage in corners.

BOYS SOCCER

Lehighton-Palmerton

Lehighton closed its season on a winning note, cruising to a 10-3 non-league victory over Palmerton.

Mason Marchessault scored the first three goals of the game as the Indians raced out to a 6-0 halftime lead.

Marchessault also finished the contest with an assist.

Carter Strauss contributed a pair of goals and an assist, while Matt Sofranko and Ryan Graver each added a goal and a helper.

Lehighton received other scores from Eldin Cokrlija, Levi Monk and Nick Zeigenfuss. Logan Lucas and Chris Fisher chipped in with assists.

For the Blue Bombers, Corlan Wood scored two goals and Jon Perloni had two assists. Riley Fallon accounted for the other Palmerton tally.

The Indians ended 6-10-1, while the Bombers were 0-12.

Pen Argyl-Jim Thorpe

Three first-half goals by Pen Argyl enabled the Green Knights to gain a 3-2 non-league victory over Jim Thorpe.

Nathan Keiper’s tally gave Pen Argyl a lead before Thorpe’s Marc Waslesyn, off an assist from Jack Morris, tied the score at 1-1. Cade Deitz and Matt Dunart registered goals for the Knights before halftime to make it 3-1.

The Olympians’ Chris Condly narrowed the gap with a goal, with the helper going to Dawson Meckes, but couldn’t get the equalizer.

Zachary Morro made 12 saves for the winners.

The loss dropped Thorpe to 11-4-1.

FIELD HOCKEY

PM West-Pleasant Valley

Matti Hyland scored two goals and handed out three assists as Pleasant Valley rolled past Pocono Mountain West, 11-0, in an Eastern Pennsylvania Conference game.

The Bears, who out shot their opponent 39-0, also received a hat trick from Candyce Fougere.

Other PV players to find the back of the cage included Liz Gouger, Arianna Mulligan, Heather Todaro, Jill Donatelli, Briella Kish and Nikol Smale.

Gouger and Jordan Kautzsch both added assists.

Pleasant Valley, who also had a 9-0 advantage in corners, is now 5-0 on the season and have outscored its opponents by a 31-2 margin.

VOLLEYBALL

Pleasant Valley-PM West

Pocono Mountain West kept its record perfect by posting a 25-12, 25-13, 23-25, 25-16 Eastern Pennsylvania Conference victory over Pleasant Valley.

The Bears (3-2) received six kills and three digs from Lexi Womack, while Sarah Ballek finished with five kills. Jackie James contributed four kills and four digs, with Kristin Farris adding 15 digs.

PV also was aided by Emily Shupp’s five digs and eight assists, while Andrea Crilley had three digs, three assists, two aces and two kills. Kaitlyn Blondo chipped in four digs and two assists, and Sophia Tauers had three assists and a pair of digs.

The Panthers improved to 8-0 with the win.

CROSS COUNTRY

Schuylkill League

Junior High Meet

The Lehighton boys edged Tamaqua to capture first place at the Schuylkill League Junior High cross country championships.

Pottsville earned the title in the girls meet.

Brayden Johnson paced the Indians with a first-place finish, winning the race in a time of 9:11. The champs also received top-10 finishes from Elijah Pagotto (eighth) and Kyle Kuznicki (ninth).

Tamaqua’s Anthony Marchetti placed second in 9:12, as the Blue Raiders managed 35 points to Lehighton’s 31. Tamaqua’s Levi Kunkel finished fourth.

Weatherly’s Andrew Dotzel turned in a sixth-place finish.

In the girls race, Jim Thorpe’s Lindsey Patton was the top local finisher, placing sixth.

Tamaqua’s team placed third, with Samantha Plasha ending in eighth.

The league also held a JV race. Lehighton’s Alex Thomas was the top area finisher in the boys race, placing ninth, while Olivia Renode crossed the line fourth in the girls competition. Tamaqua’s Madelyn Jones was sixth.
