Bingo challenge targets veterans’ wellness

It is important to get your body moving, and the Carbon County Veterans Affairs director and an area doctor want to challenge Carbon and Schuylkill veterans to a unique game of bingo.

Christine LeClair announced that through a partnership with Dr. Joanne Calabrese of St. Luke’s Walk with A Doc initiative, the groups have started the 2020 Veterans Wellness Bingo Challenge as a way for veterans to eat a little healthier and get moving a little more.

“St. Luke’s moved their Walk with a Doc initiative to an online platform, and I thought that it would be great if we could collaborate to do something similar for our veterans,” LeClair said. “COVID has affected all of our lives in some way and it is so important to pay close attention to our mental and physical well-being.”

She thought why not challenge veterans through a bingo sheet that has various activities that address both mental and physical health, so through the collaboration of Calabrese and Kerri Quick of St. Luke’s the bingo sheets were created.

Activities include no screen time for one hour, eat a piece of fruit, get a flu show, walk 1 mile, meditate and more.

Veterans in Carbon and Schuylkill counties can pick up a bingo sheet at any of the local veterans organizations or email LeClair at cleclair@carboncounty.net to receive a digital copy.

Completed sheets can then be returned either to St. Luke’s Miners Campus during the hospital’s annual Veterans Breakfast or at the Lansford Stand Down event, both on Nov. 14.

Prizes will be awarded to each veteran who submits a completed bingo card and those who cover the entire bingo card will be entered into a special grand prize drawing.

For any questions, email LeClair or call her Monday through Friday at the Carbon County Veterans Affairs office at 570-325-3986.
