Fourth annual Walnutport Christmas tree lighting ceremony to be virtually broadcast

The show will still go on this holiday season in Walnutport.

But, unlike years past, the Fourth Annual Christmas tree lighting ceremony will be virtually broadcast via social media unless restrictions are lifted.

The event will be held around 5 p.m. Dec. 5 at the borough’s Recreation Center at 215 Lincoln Ave., and residents and business owners in the area are invited to participate.

However, Councilwoman Jennifer Wentz noted at Thursday’s borough council meeting that this year’s event will be different.

“Unfortunately, there will be no ceremony,” Wentz said. “People can come; they just have to abide by social distancing.”

For a minimum donation of $40, the Recreation Board will provide and set up a tree (including the tree stand). All donations can be made payable to the Borough of Walnutport Recreation Board.

The borough is limited to the number of trees that can be adopted, and as a result, trees will be assigned on a first-come basis.

Money raised through the event will benefit the Walnutport Borough Recreation Board and be used to fund future projects.

All trees will stand between 5 and 6 feet tall. Tree stands will be provided, as will a tree number once a donation has been confirmed.

Trees may be decorated starting after noon on Nov. 21 up through Dec. 4. All trees must be decorated by Dec. 4 so the borough can test the electricity and make any changes as needed.

Additional guidelines that need to be followed when decorating the trees are as follows:

• Must use LED lights when decorating, and please limit the number of lights to no more than 300. Trees using non-LED lighting will not be plugged in and/or will be asked to switch them out.

• An 8- to 10-foot outdoor extension cord should be attached and labeled with a name to the tree stand and extending out. Do not push the cord under the tree, so as not to search for the cord.

• The electricity will not be turned on when decorating trees, so be sure to test the lights before decorating it.

• There is to be no tinsel or similar items; no glass ornaments; and all ornaments used should be secured with twist-ties, pipe cleaners, etc. The Borough of Walnutport’s Recreation Board is not responsible for damage/destruction due to the above mentioned conditions.

• If bad weather does occur, take the time to check the tree in case damage had occurred.

Trees can start to be undecorated Jan. 10, and must be undecorated by Jan. 18. All trees and tree stands will be disposed of on Jan. 19. Any decorations/lights remaining on the trees after that time will be disposed of as well.

Anyone with questions or who would like to help with a donation, adoption of a tree, or sponsorship, may call Wentz at 484-273-2278, or the borough office at 610-767-1322, ext. 101.
