Man charged with possession of methamphetamine, marijuana

A Lehighton man has been charged with possession of methamphetamine and marijuana.

According to the affidavit of probable cause filed by officer Bruce Broyles of the Lehighton Borough Police Department in the case against Michael Beil:

At 9:50 p.m. Sept. 24, Broyles was assisting officers at a sobriety checkpoint on Route 443.

Officer Jonathan Bender initiated a traffic stop with a vehicle in the parking lot of Advanced Auto,

While assisting Bender, Broyles saw Beil, 34, was in the parking lot, and Broyles spoke with him to determine if he was in the vehicle Bender had pulled over.

Beil was asked if he possesses a license, which he said he did not, and admitted to driving the blue Dodge Dakota, which was towing a black utility trailer.

As Broyles spoke with Beil, he had heavily glassed over eyes, which were also bloodshot, and his speech was rapid and slurred as well.

Beil said he had no medical conditions but injured his right knee. He said he was not taking any medications or illegal substances.

Police conducted roadside sobriety testing.

Beil refused to do the walk and turn test, stating his injury to his knee would prohibit him from successfully completing the test. He did attempt the one leg stand test, but when he tried he said he could not do this test either due to the same injury.

Beil was taken into custody, and a red container with a crystal-like substance, plastic bags and a prescription bottle with suspected methamphetamine were found.

Beil was confirmed to be in possession of about 7.9 grams of methamphetamine, 1.6 grams of green vegetable like matter consistent with that of marijuana; and a plastic bag possession what appeared to be psychedelic mushroom. Beil had $239 in cash.

Beil said all of those substances were for his personal use. He could not provide an answer as to why the methamphetamine was packaged into separate baggies as they were.

Beil faces charges of manufacture, delivery or possession with intent to manufacture or deliver; possession of controlled substance; use/possession of drug paraphernalia; DUI; and driving without a license.

He is currently incarcerated in the Carbon County Correctional Facility in lieu of $25,000 bail, and scheduled to have a preliminary hearing Oct. 7 before District Judge Joseph D. Homanko Sr. of Weatherly.
