Palmerton captures D-11 team title

HELLERTOWN - The championship run continues for the Palmerton golf team.

Since winning the school’s first ever district title last fall, the Blue Bombers have won every team title they competed for, including this year’s Colonial League title.

They can now add a District 11 Championship to their impressive list of accolades after they shot a score of 332 in difficult conditions Wednesday at The Steel Club to beat Moravian Academy (345), Mahanoy Area (420) and Weatherly (465).

“The kids did their job as a team,” said Palmerton head coach Alex Knoll. “It was a really tough day in the wind. They had to grind it out. I don’t think anyone had an easy day out there. They kept with it. They’re all mentally strong, and they fight for each other.”

The Bombers top two players, Tyler Hager and Josh Suto, who finished 1-2 at their league championship last week, didn’t play their best on Wednesday. But they battled their way through their rounds to help the team capture the title.

Hager shot 81 to tie for fourth place individually and lead the team. Derek Rae tied for sixth with an 83. Connor Reinhard and Suto tied for seventh individually at 84.

“Just for all of us to be between 81 and 84, that’s great,” said Hager. “We all could have played better, but just to capture districts, we knew that was our goal coming into it and we did it. Now we’ve got another chance to make it to states as a team.”

Dominic Kintz was also part of the winning team. His score of 90 was not part of the team score.

The Bombers will play a team from District 1 or 12 in next Wednesday’s PIAA subregional. The winner will advance to the state team championship tournament Monday, Oct. 26 at Heritage Hills Golf Resort in York.

The Bombers made regionals last season, where they lost to Deven Prep.

“Without the individuals moving on, I think we might actually have a fire in our gut next week knowing this is our only chance to move on,” said Knoll. “We’re very much looking forward to playing in the subregional next week.”

Hager, a sophomore who finished fourth at districts last season, missed advancing to states individually by one place as only the top three finishers in Class 2A boys move on this year.

“I tripled the first hole, just made bad putts,” he said. “I found myself above the hole, which you can’t do. I rallied ... and ended up with 41 on the front nine, which is pretty good.”

After the bogey, Hager played his next 11 holes at 2-over par, but three straight bogeys and a double late in the middle of his back nine dropped him out of the top three.

Lehighton’s Jack Lorenz made a run at qualifying for states in Class 3A, where five players advanced. He shot 1-over par 37 on the front nine, which tied for the third-best front-nine score in the boys 3A field. He was among the top five before making bogeys on his last three holes to finish at 6-over par 78 and tie for seventh place, just two shots out of a tie for fourth place.

Weatherly was one of four teams to qualify for the Class 2A team competition. The Wreckers were led by Antonio Colencio, who shot a 105.

BARKER AND BARKER ... Liberty High School senior Jordan Barker won the Class 3A boys district title with a 1-under par 71. He edged his brother Jase, a freshman, by one shot and led his team to the Class 3A team title. Their team also includes Jordan’s and Jase’s cousin Jimmy Barker, who finished sixth individually.

WONG WINS GIRLS TITLE ... Emmaus junior Evelyn Wong won the girls 3A title on the first hole of a playoff. She tied teammate and three-time district champ Michelle Cox at 76, then won with a par on the first hole of the playoff.

ORTWEIN EDGES MEYERS ... Ben Ortwein of Notre Dame shot 75 to win the boys Class 2 title by one shot over Nathan Meyers of Central Catholic.

SANBORN SAILS HOME FREE ... Moravian Academy’s Grace Sanborn won the Class 2A girls title by 28 strokes, finishing at 76, with North Schuylkill’s Brooke Powis (104) in second place.
