Woman burned in Pottsville house fire

A woman was taken to the hospital Tuesday with burns after she jumped from a second floor of a house on fire in Pottsville.

Pottsville Fire Chief James Misstishin Sr. said firefighters found the woman on the porch at 711 W. Market St. when they arrived moments after the 1:17 p.m. dispatch from the Schuylkill County Communications Center, which came in as a working house fire. He said witnesses told him she jumped from the second floor. Her name and condition were not provided.

Misstishin said eight people were displaced from four apartments from the fire that started at 711 and spread to 713. Fire damage to 713 is limited to the attic, although smoke and water damage are noticeable.

“There is extensive fire damage to the second and third floor of 711( W. Market St.),” he said.

Flames were shooting out of the second floor windows when firefighters arrived from a nearby carbon monoxide call on Arch Street. A damage estimate was not available. He said both landlords have insurance, but only one renter does.

Patti Daley with the American Red Cross Three Rivers chapter said a significant other of the injured woman said she was flown to Lehigh Valley Hospital-Cedar Crest in Allentown.

Daley said eight people, two families each in 711 and 713, were provided food, lodging and clothing.

Misstishin said the fire was contained by 2:30 p.m., but personnel remained hours later as needed. John Burns, a state police fire marshal, was on scene to help in the investigation, Misstishin said.

“It’s undetermined. Under investigation,” Misstishin said.

The home did have working smoke detectors, he said.

All city fire companies responded to the fire as did Minersville Fire and Rescue, Schuylkill Haven and Tamaqua Rapid Intervention Teams. The Port Carbon Fire Department was on standby at the Humane Fire Company to respond if needed in the city.

Misstishin said two firefighters were injured, one from Pottsville the other from Schuylkill Haven. Both were treated and released, he said, adding one was attended to on scene while the the other was treated at the hospital.

Several homes were destroyed by a fast moving fire Tuesday afternoon in Pottsville. The fire was reported around 1:30 p.m. at 711 West Market street as a worker with entrapment. Firefighters battled the flames and heavy smoke to search for any victims. Within minutes the flames to 713 Market. The multi alarm fire brought companies as far away as Tamaqua.
